Spotlight Residency Workshop:
Sarah Marie Hughes
CapitalBop is thrilled to partner with Sitar Arts Center to present a monthly educational event as part of our Spotlight Residency. Each month, our featured Spotlight artist-in-residence will present a performance/workshop for the students and families in attendance.
Our third Spotlight artist-in-residence is saxophonist Sarah Marie Hughes, a young innovator in the DMV’s creative music scene who has established herself as a powerhouse bandleader, composer, improvisor, and educator. At Sitar, she offers a special sort of teaching experience: an interactive conduction workshop, where young musicians can learn the basics of conducted improvisation. The first segment of the workshop will consist of learning the ropes of the conduction process, and the second will be a full-on performance by the students at Sitar, conducted by Hughes herself.
The workshop is all-ages (but focused on grades 5-10), free of charge, and open to the public. It will take place on Friday, September 28th, at 6 p.m., at Sitar Center, 1700 Kalorama Rd NW #101, Washington, DC 20009. The event is preceded by complimentary pizza and soft drinks at 5:30.
We’re also happy to announce that all students can attend Hughes’ performances the prior weekend at Local 16 on U Street — completely FREE. (In fact, all of our Spotlight concerts are now free for students.) For more information, click here!
The event is open to ALL students and families, from Sitar and beyond. Please register using the button below, so we know to expect you!
