Through Cats’ Eyes: joy and resistance in jazz through the lens of violinist Jamie Sandel

Editor’s note: This article is part of a recurring series highlighting D.C. musicians who double as photographers, part of a long tradition in jazz that has included legends like Milt Hinton, Oscar Peterson and Sy Johnson. You can find other entries in the series here.

Jamie Sandel is a bassist, violinist, composer and radio host living and working in D.C. and the greater mid-Atlantic. As a musician, Sandel has worked as both a sideman and bandleader, providing not only a deep sense of musicianship, but also a considered sense of community-building, having been born and raised squarely within the DMV’s wide circle of arts practitioners. Sandel is also a multimedia creative professional who has photographed and filmed some of the music’s most important practitioners – like Robert Glasper – with a sensitivity that reveals his deep experience both on and off the stage.

The photos below convey the multi-dimensional existence that many creative practitioners must attend to these days, from national tours to quiet moments at home.

Amy, Dr. Karen, Jesss — Pen Arts, Dupont — March 2024. Since then, this conversation has become a podcast episode, and the programmer and steward of Pen Arts, Timoteo Murphy, survived a horrible stabbing.
Ivan — Rhizome DC — March 2024. Ivan was one of my best friends in high school. He got me into weird music back then. Now we’re friends who both make weird music at Rhizome.
UPENDO — Nine Orchard, NYC — May 2024. Baltimore fire in downtown Manhattan. I taped this show for Brandon and rode the red-eye Amtrak back with the band the same night.

Virg — Songbyrd, NE DC — May 2024. Shots taken for My Body, My Festival. I love shooting live music, and I especially love shooting live music on stages I get to play on as well.
Quiet Moments — Brightwood, NW DC — March 2024. The walk back to my apartment from the supermercado and lavanderia. Inspired by Brian Settles’s photographic love letters to his neighborhood.

Screaming in the belly of the beast — Downtown DC — February 2024. Photos from demonstrations are usually the first for me to lose track of and never edit, but I had some from earlier this year.  Viva Jazz and Justice. All Power to the Imagination. Free Palestine!
