Jazz in the Garden at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is one of D.C.’s many great summer traditions. Held Fridays from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., this year’s concert series commenced yesterday and will run through Sep. 9. Known for its great diversity of artists and also for the breezy, cocktail-hour vibe, this venue provides a scenic backdrop for a great musical experience.

Small bites, sangria and cold beer add to the convivial atmosphere, which does put the music more in the background than at most concerts. But for those willing to actually listen, it offers yet another great experience in the D.C. jazz scene.

Yesterday’s performance on the National Mall showcased the Brazilian sounds of Origem, a quintet that played an infectious set with some serious grooves for dancing and some mellow tunes that helped soak up the hot, setting sun.

Check the National Gallery of Art website for more information on the upcoming shows. Or better yet, just stop by any Friday this summer at 5 p.m. to be surprised and entertained. Below is a collection of shots from yesterday’s show.
