Few contemporary vocalists have internalized, personalized and redefined the Black music tradition as thoroughly as Fay Victor. If that sounds like high praise, don’t just trust us.

Time Out New York writes, “Fay Victor manages to deconstruct the tradition of jazz song without pretension or tedium—quite a high-wire feat.” Ben Ratliff of the New York Times says she is “artistically complete.”

CapitalBop is thrilled to present Victor here with an all-star quartet, known as SoundNoiseFUNK, featuring the great Tomeka Reid on cello, Joe Morris on guitar, and Reggie Nicholson on drums and percussion. The concert will be in the black box theater at Capital Fringe, where the acoustics are excellent and the environs are up-close-and-personal. The last time we hosted a show there, it was a sold-out presentation of Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble. Come out and help us repeat the success on Saturday.

D.C. saxophonist and composer Sarah Hughes will start things off with a set of her own, in duet with drummer Nate Scheible. Hughes is a remarkable talent in her own right, and one whose growth has been tracked on the CapitalBop stage: We’ve been presenting her since the earliest days of the DC Jazz Loft in 2011.
