April is Jazz Appreciation Month, but this year, we’re moving beyond appreciation. At CapitalBop we’re inviting you to get activated and help us continue this ever-vital work to preserve, promote and present jazz in D.C.

Our city is facing a vacuum of local, cultural journalism, with outlets like the Washington Post gutting their local reporting. Where other outlets have bowed out, we’re doubling down. CapitalBop has spent the past 16 years promoting jazz and culture in our city and connecting our community to the music that keeps the heartbeat of our city alive.

To keep the beat going in the capital, despite the constant attacks on the arts, we’re aiming to raise $10,000 in order to fund CapitalBop’s programs that present, promote and preserve this music in D.C.

Will you make a contribution this April to ensure we have what it takes to preserve and propel D.C.’s jazz culture into the future?

Support CapitalBop

CapitalBop, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to uplifting jazz (aka Black American Music or creative music) as a vital and ever-growing cultural institution of Washington, D.C. We support the music’s growth by offering press coverage and comprehensive D.C. jazz calendar listings in our online magazine; documenting the city’s brilliant artists through high-quality video content;, presenting live shows and festivals at parks, galleries, theaters and clubs around the city; and creating arts-education opportunities that engage jazz’s next generation of listeners and players.

Our work is made possible by the sustained support of our community. We compensate the artists that perform on CB’s stages at industry-standard rates thanks to a mix of ticket sales and philanthropic support. On the editorial side, our writers are always fully compensated for their work to document the scene, which requires full-time attention from a committed team of editors, contributors and. We are fortunate to have grant support for much of this work, but that too requires sustained administrative attention. Your contribution to CapitalBop makes all of this possible.

When we founded CapitalBop in 2010, our main mission was to support and complement what was then a thriving array of jazz venues across D.C. Over the past 15 years, the city has changed drastically, and today most of those spaces are shuttered. It’s increasingly up to us to actively create the spaces where creative Black music and its extensions will grow in D.C., and to support the venues that do remain. In the shadow of a political climate that has become dismissive-at-best of Black history, we will continue to do this work in a manner that unequivocally uplifts the importance of jazz as a vessel for creativity, storytelling and resilience, rooted in Black American history and culture.

Thank you for being a part of CapitalBop’s journey and supporting us in this work. If you appreciate what we do, we would be grateful for your donation and excited to welcome you into our community of supporters. Donate today — and get ready to come out for some great music at our next event!
